The smooth
flow of international commerce today depends as much
on sharing of information and flawless documentation
as it does on actual transportation services. Carriers
of all modes, ports, warehouses and other participants
in door-to-door transportation require a variety of
shipping documents, most of which need to be delivered
electronically to avoid shipping delays. Many nations,
including the U.S., control what is exported from their
country to prevent certain technologies and other goods
from falling into the hands of potential enemies and
terrorists. All nations control imports into their country
with customs regulations and usually duties. Security
documentation has become an additional element to the
shipping process. Banks and other financial institutions
depend on specific documents to authorize payments and
transfers of title for the goods moved.
Typical documentation services would include
the following, but many others are possible:
- Preparing and processing export declarations, bills
of lading and other export documentation
- Preparing and/or sending advanced notices to banks,
shippers, and consignees
- Clearing shipments in accordance with United States
Government export regulations
